In a prediction made in 2013, Gartner had declared that the Windows Mobile OS will cross the iOS in terms of market share by 2017. It is 2017, the results are out and the Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS is currently sitting at the third position with 0.3% of the market share while Apple's iOS continues to occupy the second position with 17.9% market share. As always, Android sits at the top with an overwhelming 81.7% market share. Note that all of the statistics mentioned here are based on Q4 2016 results only.

It is actually quite sad to see that Blackberry's market share isn't even there. We kid you not! It's actually not there (0.0%) as you can see in the screenshot above. iOS managed to make a 0.2% improvement in a quarterly comparison with Q4 2015, while Android gained an additional 1% in the same comparison. As 99.6% of all new smartphones sold in the last quarter happens to be either an iPhone or an Android powered smartphone, it is pretty safe to say that unless something miraculous happens, this is how the market will stay like for the foreseeable future.

We recently got to know that Samsung might be coming on-board with Google to optimize TouchWiz, and a new news has added more credibility to this rumour. As per ITHome, Samsung will be concentrating more on user experience enhancement with the Galaxy S7, while Google engineers will help the Samsung backend code on its popular customized version of Android.

The report also says that Samsung and Google's primary goal is to make a "a non-delayed operating experience", one with "superior fluency than iOS". Now, Android has got huge market and is probably having more support on high-end devices when it comes to general fluidity. In the recent times, given how Apple's updates to iOS continue to bring new issues (especially as they try to make the OS more flexible), it's not clear if Android will ever be as optimized as the iOS.

The Korean tech giant has already attained a significant level of optimization with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, and it would be super exciting to see TouchWiz become even more efficient in the future (it would also be great to see Samsung solve the issues pertaining to multitasking in high-end devices). The report also establishes that the microSD slot will come back with the Galaxy S7, though at this very moment things are quite hazy. We'll wait and watch!

Google translate is one of the most useful apps out there and now it will allow you to translate text without even having to switch between the app you are currently in and Google Translate. In supported messaging applications like Whatsapp, all you will need to do is copy the text that you want to translate and an option to use Google Translate will become available on the spot. You will however, need to be running at least Android version 4.2 (the later the better) to avail the feature though.

Apple users on the other hand, will get access to the offline translation feature on Google Translate for the first time. One may say that it's a little late though as the ability to translate without an active internet connection has been a part of the Android OS versions for quite a while now. Nevertheless, Google has improved upon the feature by compressing the 52 downloadable language packs to roughly 25MB each. The summary is that both iOS users and Android users of the Google Translate will be getting updates, albeit with varying added functionalities.

According to a report by Appsflyer, Android users are much more likely to uninstall applications from their smartphones than iOS users. To be more precise, Android users are about twice as likely to uninstall an app from their phone, as compared to an Apple iPhone user. The conclusion was drawn by the analysts after going through data based on 500 apps and about 20 million devices. The comparatively short-lived interest in multiple apps, as exhibited by the Android populace could be a result of any one or multiple of the following reasons.

Android users outnumber iPhone users quite significantly, and unless the data was collected by keeping that fact in mind, the sheer numerical superiority can definitely contribute to such an overwhelming difference in behaviour between the two groups.

The Play Store now officially has more apps than the App Store, but when it comes to quality, the App Store is still leading. The Play Store has a lot of buggy and broken apps on it, which might be the reason why Android users uninstall a lot of the apps just shortly after downloading and using it.

Finally, it could be the absolute low-end, outdated garbage which some of the sellers (including Samsung) still sells to their customer base in developing nations like India, Pakistan, etc. Some of these horrible outdated phones even have internal storage capacities as low as 4GB (Useable memory being anything in between 1.2GB to 2.2GB at most). Add to this the fact that these devices also sport ancient hardware that can't even start the modern games properly and you have an instant answer for a lot of those quick uninstalls.

Traffic

According to the latest month web traffic report by NetMarketShare, Android has unseated iOS sometime this July. Google's Android platform accounted for 44.62% of total Mobile Web traffic, whereas iOS trailed a little behind with 44.19%. Apparently, this is the first time Android has taken the lead in this department.

mobile web

While some may argue that the lead is negligible, it appears that Android's dominant position on the market is finally beginning to pay off for Google. The latest official data from one of the most trustworthy sources, Strategy Analytics, revealed that Android accounted for 84.6% of the smartphone market in Q2 of the current year. Broken down to OS versions, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean contributed for 10.03% of all mobile traffic, Android 4.4 KitKat for 9.28%, and Android 4.2 for 8.77%. Meanwhile, more than half of iOS's result is formed by users, who accessed the world wide web from their iPad tablets.

Two of the other relatively major operating systems, Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS, grasped 2.49% and 1.21% of said market, respectively. Java ME and Symbian, however, stood between them and the leaders, Android and iOS.

It's been another great year for innovative new apps arriving on Android and IOS and we hope this trend will continue throughout 2017. It's true that there is an app out there for just about anything and even though some are truly more useful that others we have selected a range of the latest and upcoming Android apps for you to enjoy.

FINGERPRINT GESTURES
The good thing about a free app is that whilst it might not end up being exactly what you initially imagined it to be you will always have the ability to give it a try first. Thankfully Fingerprint Gestures is exactly that kind of app and even though it has a few teething problems on certain devices it can allow you to take better control of various smartphone-related tasks.

PHOTOSCAN
This useful little Google app gives you the chance to scan your existing physical photographs and turn it into a digital alternative. As you enter the scan process you can select a number of options that will allow you to edit or enhance the original photo as you see fit. It's pretty simple to use and fantastically helpful if you have stacks and stacks of old photos lying around.

IQ WARS
Quiz lovers will certainly get a kick out of this new generation IQ, trivia and quiz app. It's filled with challenging quizzes and various live tournaments and even gives registered players the chance to win actual prizes. You can compete alongside other players in realtime and it's a great opportunity to show off your general knowledge skills to friends and family.

LEARN HOW TO DRAW
We do love an app that has a title which pretty much explains exactly what it does, at least that way if you're an avid app fan that collects and stores apps all over the place you'll be able to quickly discover what it's used for. This cool app features a whole host of various lessons ranging in levels of difficulty in order to help improve your drawing skills. Each tutorial featured on the app was created especially by well known Irish comic book artist Will Sliney, and there's plenty to pick from.

TRANSFERGO
There are plenty of money-sharing apps out there but TransferGo works a little differently and is ideal for those looking to make international payments or money transfer. No doubt at some point you have probably been stung by an unexpected banking fee relating to either sending or receiving international funds in various currencies. TransferGo eliminates these extortionate rates providing a quick and easy to use service that will let you transfer money across Europe for a mere fraction of the price. As smartphones continue the march of money evolution, this app is a must!

PYRO!
Pyro isn't exactly one of the most practical or useful apps currently around but it strangely satisfying. This augmented reality-based app gives Android owners the chance to watch just about anything around them burn, all virtually of course. Just point your phone's camera at the place, item or person you'd like to see set in flames and start drawing in the burning flames with your finger.

iOS 9

It's been a little over a month since Apple's new iOS 9 was rolled out. Just a few days later, Apple announced that its new operating system had been installed on more than 50% of active iPhones and iPads, which made it the fastest adoption rate in the company's successful history.

It's undoubtedly an exciting time, not only for Apple fans but gamers at large. Why? iOS 9 introduces a series of game-changing (pardon the pun) features and engines which, if proven as successful as tech experts predict, will have an industry-wide impact. After all, mobile gaming is a $25 billion per year industry on both iOS and Android. It's actually expected to surpass console games in terms of revenue by the end of the 2015.

Let's take a detailed look at the iOS 9 features which will make a difference in the way we play on smartphones, and explore what each one means for end users.

3D Touch: Being Under Pressure is Great

iOS games

3D Touch is the innovation cornerstone of Apple's iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, as it brings brand new ways to interact with the screen. Since their popularization in the late 2000s and up to now, touchscreens have been registering a set series of gestures: tapping, swiping or pinching. 3D Touch brings new gestures into play, which Apple has named "peek" and "pop." iPhone screens now respond to actual levels of pressure instead of mere touch or finger movement. As demonstrated in the Special Event Apple this September, this technology - dubbed "the next generation of multi-touch enables you to preview an email, by pressing lightly, or make it pop up by pressing harder. Similarly, users can access different interface features and shortcuts by applying different levels of pressure.

There are, of course, many more applications to this haptic technology and gaming is perhaps the most interesting area at least according to Wired magazine, which has welcomed it as "Apple's biggest gaming innovation." These new gesture options will effectively enable game developers to make complex games more intuitive and improve on the shortcomings of mobile gaming controls in comparison to other platforms.

Among the first games to take advantage of 3D Touch was an App Store Editor's Pick, futuristic racing simulator AG Drive. While accelerating and breaking your vehicle used to require tapping and holding different points on the screen, developer company ZORG has now mapped acceleration to 3D Touch, adding new depth to the already acclaimed game.

iOS games

Another interesting case is multi-award winning platform puzzle BADLAND. Frogmind games recently updated the addictive side-scroller with 3D Touch-based controls which help players navigate stages, as well as new optional "force objects" available in the level editor. Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade, is the first game developed specifically for the iPhone 6s. It is based on the popular tabletop strategy game franchise of the same name. In Warhammer, pressure is mapped to zoom controls to allow players to zoom in on the action.

According to the Entertainment Software Association's annual report, casual, puzzle and card games are the most frequently played genres, reaching an impressive 77% of all games played on mobile devices. After the introduction of 3D Touch, developers within these genres have been implementing the technology in the most creative of ways to make their app stand out. While games like Zombie Tsunami have opted to feature 3D Touch merely in mini-games and menus, the potential is great - and smart, innovative use will prove catalytic in making a game more popular.

ReplayKit: Play it again, Sam.

iOS games

Although iOS 9's new ReplayKit is a tool for developers, its implementation has certainly been swift and clear to gamers. ReplayKit easily enables videogame creators to implement game recording and sharing features, so that you can share your accomplishments with friends and social networks.

It seems that Apple has wisely picked up on the latest trends in eSports and the growing popularity of game streaming services, such as Twitch.tv. More people than ever -71 million in 2014, as reported by SuperData Research - watch competitive gaming events while e-gaming revenue predicted to hit $465 million in 2017 according to research firm NewZoo. Replaying your own games and watching others' sessions for enjoyment as well as tips and tricks seems to be all the rage right now, and iOS 9 brings that functionality right to your fingertips.
Many iOS games were already touching upon this trend by providing gamers with detailed history and stats on their previous games, such as PokerStars Mobile. The popular poker app, which recently added a range of games for the casino market, dedicates a whole section of their app to a history feature, giving gamers the chance to follow their progress closely. However, the introduction of ReplayKit technology makes this process more visually appealing, by introducing video and also adds the capacity to conveniently edit and add voice-over commentary.

This feature was welcomed by gaming companies and implemented almost overnight, as a number of games have already been updated to include it. One of the first was Gang Nations, the popular combat strategy game for iPhone and Android. It now enables players to record their battles with rival gangs and share them on social networks. Many more games, such as Breakneck and Playdemic's Sims-like hit Village Life followed suit and more are still to come.

GameplayKit and Model I/O: Under the Hood

One of the three game developer-exclusive kits Apple introduced in iOS 9 is the aptly named GameplayKit. It encompasses a series of tools that handle gameplay logic - randomness, simulation, pathfinding... Similarly, Model I/O is designed to light 3D models in both game and app design. Finally, the pre-existing game-specific SpriteKit, SceneKit and Metal have been updated to developers' delight, allowing for better use of the iPhone's central and graphics processors.

iOS games

If all this sounds a bit too technical, but don't worry. All you need to know is that in effect, these tools will help developers create more immersive games with more complex rules and ultimately, better gameplay and more realistic graphics than ever. Apple promises that it will bring "console-grade" games to its devices.

For a taste of Apple's SceneKit, used for powering 3D games, you can check out the free fast-paced game Marballistic, where you control a marble ball frantically jumping from platform to platform.

Game Center: Let your Friends Play

Game Center, Apple's social gaming network, has also received a handy add-on. With the advent of iOS 9, Game Center supports guest players. Device owners no longer have to worry about friends borrowing their phone to try out games and messing up their stats, high-scores and achievements. Said friends can now play as guest players - in fact, up to three players can play real-time games and up to a massive fifteen players can play turn-based games on iOS 9.

Battery life and App Thinning: Every Little Bit Helps

iOS 9 promises to deliver up to 4 hours longer battery life than before thanks to under-the-hood performance tweaks and a new feature called Low Power Mode. By automatically disabling unneeded services, Low Power Mode enables you to conserve juice so there's more there when you feel like gaming. This feature seems similar to Sony's Battery STAMINA mode and brings a much needed update to iPhone's battery life, which is promised to also last longer because of hardware optimization.

On top of that, Apple introduced a new technology named App Thinning. It allows for apps to be optimized for specific devices, so that downloaded packages don't include irrelevant files and are, as a result, less chunky. This way, devices are left with more available space, while games are faster to install and launch.

iOS 9's reviews have been stellar, especially in terms of gaming capabilities. Now it's up to the developers to utilize all that it has to offer. As gamers, all we have to do is explore their efforts and decide for ourselves.

Apteligent is a research and analytics firm that has come into fresh attention with their latest reports about the iOS 9.3. If what they are claiming is to be believed, then the iOS 9.3 might just be the most stable version of the iOS that has been released by Apple in the recent past. If reports from the last eight days are taken into account, then crash rate for the iOS 9.3 stands at 2.2% as of now.

The 2.2% crash rate is a significantly improved result when compared to earlier iterations of the Apple iOS. The iOS 8, iOS 9 and even the iOS 9.2 had shown a crash rate that was north of 3.2% after the same eight day timeframe. In fact, as if surpassing all its predecessors wasn't enough, the iOS 9.3 has managed to beat the 2.6% crash rate of Android Marshmallow as well.

The only known issue with the iOS 9.3 yet, was the hiccup that it experienced during the initial roll-out. Apparently, some of the older Apple devices could not make use of the new update procedure and therefore, the roll-out was temporarily stopped in order to sort the problem out. We will find out more about this new iOS in time, but it sure looks like Apple has managed to produce the most stable mobile OS available right now.

There is a new update released by Apple for iOS 9.2.1 to the users, which makes it the first update to iOS 9 after iOS 9.2's release in December of 2015. iOS 9.2.1 has been undergoing test since December 16th and till now there versions have been released to the developers and public beta testers.

Today's iOS 9.2.1 update is available as an over-the-air update for all iOS 9 users. A small update, iOS 9.2.1 is fifth when it comes to to iOS 9 in versions, after the releases of iOS 9.0.1, iOS 9.0.2, iOS 9.1, and iOS 9.2.

iOS 9.2.1, as a 9.x.x update, has small improvements, concentrating mainly on back-end performance and bug fixes instead of features that can be seen by users. As per Apple's release notes, this update will make your device more secure and get rid of some bugs. It also comes with a fix for a major Mobile Device Management issue that affected enterprise users. This particular issue had possibility of breaking the application installation process while using an MDM server. After iOS 9.2.1, iOS 9.3 will be pushed to the devices which is also going through testing by developers and beta users. Scheduled release is in the spring, iOS 9.3 is a major release that brings in a new Night Shift feature to decrease blue light exposure during the evening for better sleep and adds new educational features.

Apple HealthKit

A bug in the HealthKit suite is forcing Apple to remove all apps using the framework from the App Store. The HealtKit enabled apps were supposed to launch with iOS 8 today, but this is postponed indefinitely.

An Apple representative has said that the company is working on a solution to the problem, which is likely to come out in the next couple of weeks.

iphone 6

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller made this statement :

"We discovered a bug that prevents us from making HealthKit apps available on iOS 8 today. We're working quickly to have the bug fixed in a software update and have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month." - Apple

ios 8

iOS 8 has been in wide release for just under one week, which means it is time to start looking ahead to Apple's first bug fix update for the software. And, as usual, the first update will be aiming at smaller troubles rather than trying to fix the larger issues that have been found in the new iOS. We've heard about Wi-Fi issues with iOS 8, and there is also the new study claiming that iOS 8 is less stable than iOS 7.

However, as is the way Apple works, we should probably expect fixes for those issues with iOS 8.1 and with subsequent updates to the various third-party apps that are likely part of iOS 8's crash problems. The iOS 8.0.1 Change-log is the following:

- Phone: Addresses bugs with call forwarding and freezing when accessing visual voicemail

- Keyboard: Fixes an issue with keypad not appearing to enter - iCloud Keychain verification codes

- Safari: Fixes a problem with videos occasionally not playing

- Sharing: Fixes AirDrop support for Passbook passes

- VPN: Addresses an issue with installing VPN profiles

iPhone

The recent rumor about the upcoming operating system update by Apple for iPhone is relatively shocking. A French technology blog reported that iOS 13 will not be compatible with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or iPhone SE, and support for the original iPad Air and iPad mini 2 will also be dropped. This is the second time we are hearing this rumor. Earlier an Israeli website The verifier reported that iOS 13 will be expected in this June at the Worldwide Developers Conference and may drop support for a number of iPhones and iPads. The site had a similar list of the iPhone for which iOS 13 won't be available. As for iPads, The Verifier believes Apple will drop support for the iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, and possibly the iPad mini 4.

If the rumor is true, it would mean that Apple dropping support for its three generations of iPhone at a time. This is rare and unexpected. As Apple used to provide software updates for its iOS for as long as possible. Even iPhone 5s and newer had support from iOS 11 and iOS 12. At the time iOS 12 launched some of the devices were already 5 years old. If Apple drop support for everything up to the iPhone 7 would leave only devices from 2016 or later on the list.

In the previous post we talked about Apple's new advertising campaign which encourages users to give back to their iPhones to Apple while upgrading for their iPhone. Many users would still choose to sell their old iPhones over eBay but after this the old iPhones would get their prices down in the market and more people would choose to trade-in for new iPhone now. iOS 13 is expected to be unveiled at Apple's annual WWDC keynote on June 3, so till than we can't say anything for sure. This is a rumor in question.

apple ios13

Apple unveiled the latest update tot its iOS operating system, iOS 13 at WWDC event in San Jose. Most interesting change for iOS 13 is the addition of a new dedicated dark mode that switches the system UI to darker color scheme. Dark mode isn't a new thing and we have already seen it by other mobile vendors. What's different is its schedule feature which automatically changes the mode based on the time of the day. Wallpapers have been optimized to feature variants for both light and dark mode themes. Dark mode is battery friendly and also easy to on eyes.

The new photo app lets users to edit pictures without any other software. New controls include vibrance, white balancing, sharpening, clarity defination, noise reduction, and vignette filters right from the photo app. It can also do the video editing at the advance level, something which used to require special dedicated software before this. The album app has also updated massively and has sorting functionality which allows users to find images from the gallery easily. Apple made a big emahasis on new privacy and security features. The iOS13 is now ‘sign in with apple' instead of your traditional email account. There are other small improvements such as you can share images without giving out your location based on your preferences.

Apple has also revamped the mapping data for its own map app. Using new technology, new map delivers significant details. Apple also introduces its own version of Google street view but Apple's implementation seems a lot more seamless and effective than what Google has achieved. Devices with A9 chips now support generation of your own Memoji stickers. iOS 13 also support external files on USB drives, SD cards or even hard drives. The new OS now supports showcasing of full file metadata, zipping, and unzipping files.

iphone ios 14

At WWDC, Apple comes up with the next-generation iOS operating system for the iPhones and iPods (7th generation). The phone comes with several cool improved features and changes. The first major change is related to its home screen. The iPhone now supports widgets which can be dragged and dropped from the today screen to the home screen. You see a redesigned App library when swipe right from the home screen which contains every application on the device in a neat folder system. You can also remove the unused apps from the home screen without actually uninstalling it. Thanks to a new smart stack feature, you can stack widgets based on time, location, and activity.

Like many things on iOS, Siri also got a completely new redesigned interface as well. The new interface opens a tiny Siri blob at the bottom-center of the screen instead of taking the whole space. Similarly, whenever you receive a call, a new compact calling screen appears that doesn't cover the whole display. Apple has also introduced a new App clips support to iOS 14 that makes everything super easy for the users who don't want to install apps for small things. With this feature you can use some features of the app like purchasing coffee, making a restaurant reservation, etc. just by scanning the code. These app clips can also be shared in messages.

An existing feature of an iPad that allows you to make FaceTime video calls while using your phone at the same time has come to the iPhone with iOS 14. With the messaging app, you can pin up to 9 conversations at the top of the app. There is also support for new in-line replies that allows you to reply to a specific message in a conversation instead of a general message. The app also has a new Memoji option that includes additional hairstyles, face coverings, age, and stickers, etc. The iOS 14 has introduced some improvements in Apple Maps as well to provide specialized electric vehicle routes, cycling directions, etc.

The latest update also added a voice translation feature that lets you choose two languages, and translate your voice into the voice as well as text translation. The company is adding support for the U1 chip, which will be able to unlock cars without the need to take your iPhone out of the pocket. Apple has not revealed the exact date for the rollout of this new iOS 14 updates but has said that it will be available later this year. Typically, the new iOS rollout begins in September, just in time for the new iPhone launch. However, it remains to be seen if Apple sticks to the same timeline.
